The details of the project
Today, the demand for totally or partially dealcoholised wines (No and Low alcohol wines; i.e., NoLo) is increasing, with a rapidly evolving market and promising future development prospects. The EU now recognizes these products within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy, generating strong interest among many producers. However, the current scientific literature remains insufficient to support informed decisions by public and private entities.
In this context, the DEWINE Nationally Relevant Research Project (PRIN) was launched, with the goal of deepening the knowledge on NoLo wines and their sustainable development prospects.
The research activities will also involve internationally renowned experts in the wine sector The project will provide:
- An initial inventory of the global NoLo wine offer (producers, product characteristics, marketing channels);
- Information on technological and regulatory aspects related to production;
- Analysis of demand and supply trends, market evolution, and consumer motivations, including willingness to pay, market segmentation, and sensory and hedonic evaluations;
- Studies on operating costs and profitability for producers, assessing different production techniques;
- Environmental assessments (using LCA methodology) and social evaluations (especially in sensitive market segments).
The analyses conducted as part of the DEWINE project are carried out both at national and international levels, with results that can be applied in other contexts as well.
Finally, DEWINE adopts innovative approaches, such as machine learning to forecast demand, and integrates various elements to provide a comprehensive overview of the NoLo wine sector.
The results will be widely disseminated, both through scientific publications and outreach materials, in order to adequately inform policy and stakeholders in the industry.
The project also allowed the activation of a PhD scholarship.
